Meet Shaun
Shaun was elected in 2018 to serve the residents of Genesee County’s 6th. A lifelong resident of Genesee County, graduating from Swartz Creek Community Schools. He spent most of his early years working at his family’s local small business, Shumaker’s Sporting Goods, now Shumaker’s Ski Shop, located on the corner of Miller and Ballenger roads in Flint. Which he is proud to say just celebrated its 74th year in business. While working there, he learned to appreciate the value of a dollar through hard work, the importance of customer service, and community relationships. It was also these experiences that fostered his love of working with the public. After high school, Shaun attended Genesee County’s own Mott Community College and later graduated from Northwood University, Magna Cum Laude, with a bachelor’s in business administration. After graduation, Shaun spent many years putting his education and experience to use, finding success within the automotive industry.
Shaun and his wife, Jennifer, recently celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary. They currently reside in Fenton Township with their three boys, Reid (20), Sam (18), and Ben (16). Shaun was taught the importance of giving back to your community from an early age by his mother, Diana. Watching and assisting her as she dedicated her time to fundraising and organizing events for Whaley Children’s Center for over 25 years. It was during this that he realized his passion for working with and mentoring children. His drive to help others succeed resulted in his taking up coaching. He has coached kids in a variety of youth sports as his own children have grown up and even coached the ski team at Flint Powers Catholic High School for several seasons.
Driven to do more in service to his community Shaun made the transition into local politics. In 2012, Shaun was elected to the Fenton Township Board of Trustees, where he served for six years. During his time there, Shaun served alongside other board members to balance budgets, reduce long-term debts and improve infrastructure throughout the township. In 2018 Shaun saw the need for common sense leadership at the county level and successfully campaigned for the open seat in Genesee County’s 6th district. Since that November, he has prioritized ensuring the 6th district receives the services and resources they deserve.
Shaun has the knowledge and experience to continue getting the job done.
